NEW YORK (AP) -- Pfizer Inc. said it's looking into a lawsuit filed by a woman who claims her sexual health problems caused her to become addicted to prescription drugs. The woman is seeking a temporary restraining order against the company that allegedly prescribed Viagra for her. The woman says she was addicted to the drug and didn't realize it until her symptoms began to subside. The woman, who is 19, is seeking $4.8 million in damages, saying she was unable to stop taking the drug because she was afraid to die.
The woman, who asked not to be identified, told the Associated Press that she was taking the drug to get "100 pills a day." She also told the AP that she had been prescribed Viagra but didn't realize that it was manufactured by Pfizer and could affect her sexual desire and ability.
The women's lawsuit filed Monday says Pfizer allegedly marketed the drug for its own purposes.
"The drug was so effective in treating female sexual dysfunction, and in causing the most serious health risks for women that it caused the female to become addicted to it and developed a condition called post-traumatic stress disorder," the suit said. "Pfizer never marketed or promoted any drug for its own purposes, and the drug did not cause sexual dysfunction."
The suit also claims Pfizer's marketing of the drug "has harmed women and children and has resulted in the destruction of their families and their health."
A Pfizer spokeswoman declined to comment.
Pfizer's U. S. patent on Viagra, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction, is still on appeal. Viagra's U. patent is still valid, but a new U. Food and Drug Administration study has found the drug can cause more serious side effects, including cardiac problems. The study was prompted by reports of heart attacks and strokes in some patients taking the drug. The study was sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline and was not directly reviewed by Pfizer, the company said.
Pfizer Inc. said Friday that it's appealing the FDA's decision."We intend to pursue litigation aggressively to protect patients and our patients," Pfizer said in a statement. "Patients and physicians should work together with the U. Food and Drug Administration to develop and file a compelling and detailed argument that Pfizer's marketing and promotional practices for Viagra are unprofessional and that its conduct and other conduct of this type should be removed as well."
Pfizer said it will vigorously challenge the FDA's ruling. But the company said it would seek approval from the U. Food and Drug Administration to continue marketing the drug.
The FDA said that the new study found that Viagra caused more serious side effects than other drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction. And it found that the drug increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes in men taking it. The study's authors said the new study was inconclusive. Viagra users also had a higher risk of suicide, and those taking the drug had a higher risk of bleeding problems, dizziness and heart attacks. More than 80 percent of users had a history of heart disease.
The FDA said it's reviewing the study. But it declined to comment on the company's response to the new study.
The women's complaint said that the women's health care system did not properly diagnose them as sexually transmitted diseases. But they said they had been sexually active for years and were able to get and keep an erection that lasted for several hours.
The women's complaint said the company's marketing of Viagra "has harmed women and children and has resulted in the destruction of their families and their health."
Viagra was not FDA approved for sale in 1998. Pfizer filed a federal lawsuit in June accusing the company of marketing the drug for medical use.

Canada's top-selling drug has long been the mainstay of treatment for erectile dysfunction, but with the advent of generic drugs, there's also been growing demand for a cheaper alternative.
As with many drugs, Viagra, the popular erectile dysfunction drug, has been linked to the drug's side effects, so Canadian pharmacies may be able to offer a better deal.
But this isn't the only issue in Canadian pharmacy:
A Canadian pharmacy that sells Viagra, the company that makes Viagra, says the Canadian version of the drug is available in the United States, too. The drug is available only through online pharmacies, but it's not a regular prescription, and the prices are much lower.
Pharmacists are also concerned about the potential for counterfeit drugs.
"Our main concern is that these counterfeit drugs are not always available online," says Dr. Eric Bier, a pharmacist at the Toronto and Ottawa area. "This is a growing problem because there are many companies who are buying these medicines online."
Pharmacy is also concerned about the potential for counterfeit drugs, as the counterfeit medications can sometimes be ineffective in treating erectile dysfunction.
"It's not like they can just walk into your pharmacy and say, 'Wow, these pills work, they're a legitimate product.' The problem is that they can be bought without a prescription," says Dr. Robert Schlosser, a professor of urology at the University of Toronto. "But they can be sold over-the-counter, and you need to be cautious."
Canada's pharmacy has been in the dark about the dangers of counterfeit drugs, but the reality is that it's still possible to buy Viagra online.
Canadian pharmacies may offer the same service as those in the United States, but they are less likely to accept counterfeit drugs. Canadian pharmacies don't have the same number of prescriptions as other countries, so there may be some confusion about the number of pills you need to fill in order to have a prescription filled.
"The most important thing to remember is that the price of a medication will vary from pharmacy to pharmacy," says Dr. Richard Blythe, president of the Canadian International Pharmacy Association.
The price of Viagra will also depend on the type of medicine you're taking and the pharmacy you're using, he says. But it's possible to buy Viagra without the prescription, as long as you're using a Canadian pharmacy. A Canadian pharmacy will usually carry a prescription for Viagra at a reasonable price.
Pharmacies in Canada may offer Viagra, but it's more difficult to purchase it over the Internet, says Dr. Marc Chastain, a pharmacist at the Toronto and Ottawa area.
Canadian pharmacies may offer Viagra, but they're not a regular prescription. Viagra can be bought online through an online pharmacy, but it's not a regular prescription.
